Fair wraps up weeklong calorie splurge
(09/16/07)Among the spiral-cut deep-fried potatoes stacked precariously on a paper plate, the fried Oreo cookies, the jumbo corn dogs and the blue cotton candy, funnel cake is king at the Southeast Missouri District Fair. The fair, which completed its one-week run Saturday, was home to 14 concession stands selling funnel cakes. No funnel-cake lover had to wait in line... 
Turnout for REO Speedwagon 'phenomenal,' fair board member says
(09/15/07)It might have been 1980 again Friday night for REO Speedwagon. The classic rock band sold out Arena Park's grandstand for its SEMO District Fair concert. When fair board members added portable bleachers, most of those seats sold, too. Peggy Berryhill, 44, and Dee Kinder, 43, both of Cape Girardeau carried their chips and sodas to the highest bleacher seat in the grandstand...

Compared with the average fairgoer, the girls lost an informal Missouri trivia contest. When asked four questions about Missouri, eight of the girls in the Preteen, Teen and Miss categories admitted they didn't know much about the state -- like the fact that it hosts the longest river in the United States...
Weekend rain kept some away from fair, music festival
(09/10/07) Rainy weather diminished this year's SEMO District Fair opening weekend crowd by about 8 percent, roughly 4,000 people, compared to last year's, but organizers say those numbers are a positive considering the effect the rains could have had. "Saturday the crowds didn't start to build until just before show time with the tractor pull," said fair spokesman Pete Poe. "Yesterday, they were in and out all day. More than 75 people showed up to watch the performance despite the threatening weather.
