Show Me Center scores a sell out
Posted Friday, February 22, 2008, at 12:21 PM<< Previous | Read comments | Respond | Email link | Next >>
The Show Me Center has done it. For the first time since 2003 (I'm fairly certain), when Toby Keith and Rascal Flatts came to town, the venue has scored a sell out. A crowd of 6,597 showed up Thursday night, despite the bad weather, for a four-band modern rock line-up: Three Days Grace, Seether, Breaking Benjamin and Hurt. Show Me Center Marketing Director Shannon Buford said he thought every person who bought a ticket went to the show, and even the extra sections that were opened up late were full. This is a big accomplishment. In recent years the venue has had some trouble attracting and selling out rock shows, but that streak has been broken. All the bands put on a great show last night. I hope there will be more concerts like this in the future at the Show Me Center
The show was great last night and they even sold beer! We took our 13 year old son and his buddy. The night was nearly perfect. The only problem we had was with the fact that all seats were "general admission," which meant we had to get there early. Then some buttholes tried to claim our seats when my wife and I went to the restroom. Getting in the doors was somewhat of a problem too. All in all we didn't like the seats being general admission.
I thought it was a great show! Whoo Hoo, Cape Girardeau had a ROCK concert! I liked the general admission so you weren't stuck in one place. I liked the idea of beer being sold.. although it was pricey. Now that I think about it that was probably done to discourage over drinking..well, if that was the case it didn't work. There's only one thing annoying about going to any kind of a concert in Cape Girardeau and that's the % of college students and other people who decide to be a giant pain. Yes, there was moshing at the Show-Me Center. I had my first experience at the Show Me Center standing on the floor which I like to do so you can get 'up close and personal' with the band, but last night that was done with a great deal of difficulty due to a per centage of people. Some of the pains were not college students, just obnoxious people. Those of you who were a pain know who you are and as you sober up today you might realize how disrespectful you were to those who were trying to the enjoy the concert. You also must realize if you want to continue to have rock concerts in Cape Girardeau you better watch out...much riff raff at a concert and we may never see another! To Hurt, Seether, especially Breaking Benjamin and Three Days Grace..Whoo Hoo..Great Concert!
Finally, a country concert is on it's way!! Sugarland, Little Big Town, and Jake Owen at the show me center, April 25th! Sugarland's first headlining tour. It is a CMT sponsored tour
Oh, I forgot..to the Show Me Center... 6597 in attendance! I hope this has opened your eyes to the fact there are many in the area that like ROCK music and we need more of them and not country stuff.
they've been selling beer at shows since 2002 now
Matt - why do you always have to be so negative? Aren't we all pleased that you are keeping score of sellouts at the Show Me Center. It was a great show last night. I will continue to support the stuff I like and hope others will keep supporting the stuff they like. Thanks Show Me Center!
the show me center would have more and more sellouts for bigger country shows, we used to get them...why not bring the allison krauss & Robert plant show in?!?!
Good to see something selling out. I attended the last Allison Krauss show. Not a sell out, good show but obviously not what fills the place. Find that sweet spot in the Cape market and sell to it.
BTW how come there are 5 bands listed for the "four band modern rock line-up".
Do you think we can get Air Supple in the near future!! Also, if you are on the main floor you need to be prepared to get crazy. Also, if you dont enjoy people drinking and getting crazy at a rock concert maybe you should take your family to the River Campus for the Nutcracker
That's a great pic of some rock being whipped out. LMAO
are you sure that Sugarland is comming? I cant find anything about it.
HANK, JR!
I think what Mama S is trying to point out is the focus on the Show Me Center's apparent short comings, rather than how great that show was.
You did report that it was a sellout, however the rest of the entry was about how it had been so long and how big of an accomplishment this is.
I'm not sure how it is the venue who is having trouble attracting crowds. It is the venue who attracts the shows, but Southeast Missouri is not a hotbed for rock and roll. How tough do you think it is for these venues to attract shows like this one and Tool to come here instead of St. Louis or Memphis or even Carbondale who is 3000 seats larger? I'm very impressed with the shows that come through here; our 15,000 seat arena in Columbia hasn't had a rock show since it opened in 2004. You've now had two top notch shows in the last 8 months.
I'm more interested in your view on the show, what you thought of Three Days Grace playing some Alice in Chains or Seether getting help from Three Days Grace to play "Broken", not how inept Southeast Missouri is about going to rock shows.
But, honestly, I don't see how reporting the facts is negative.
The show was great. The GA seating sucked. Next time, sell GA to the floor and assigned seating in the risers. All-in-all, considering the weather, it was fantastic for the Show-Me-Center. Let's get more like this here! MCR and The Used would be a good start.
=)
1000% sure bout sugarland...it hasn't been announced yet I heard it from a very reliable source, and its on pollstar as well
DDKCCG:
You must not go to many concerts?? I have been to many all over the world and when your in the standing room only section at a rock concert, there is moshing!! Drinking!!! Screaming!!! Pushing!!! Dancing!!! And just having a good time.
I thought the show was awesome!!! This was the 5th time seeing BB,& thrid TDG!
So next time we have a rock concert Cape Girardeau, do the exact same thing! Sell it out and have a blast!!
Heres a toast to more bands to come! (cause I'm tired of driving so far lol)
We had riser seating and it was great. I was glad we werent on the floor, not my style. The bands were awesome and I hope that the Show Me Center will get more hard rock in the future, because this 30 something school teacher will surely attend!!
I see what you are saying as well, but it seems you present your facts negatively. That's all I'm saying.
"In recent years the venue has had some trouble attracting and selling out rock shows, but that streak has been broken."
A link to a poorly selling concert? It seems kind of demeaning to the venue, when it should be directed at the people who weren't there. I just don't understand why those sort of comments accompany your facts.
It was an absolutely fantastic show; the best I have ever seen at the Show Me Center. I will continue to drive the 3 hours to see more shows like this one.
"In recent years the venue has had some trouble attracting and selling out rock shows, but that streak has been broken."
They have had no trouble ATTRACTING them. Why would they want to accept them when people do not come?
Maybe this show will renew the Show Me Center's hope in rock fans across the area.

Who cares if Sugarland is coming or not...for that matter any country shows....I'm 1000% sure of that. The show was great last night, me and my crew had a great time. Why do people always have to cry and moan about the seating, beer, etc. If you don't like it stay home and cry and moan to your momma.
I'm not seeing the negative slant to this story here. I took it as more of a positive that despite the weather and despite a run of disappointing draws the show was the first sell out in almost 5 years. It was a great atmosphere in the show me center and one that hadn't been experienced in a long time. Sorry to hear you missed it Matt, whether you're a fan of the genre or not, it was a great time and good to see the place packed to the brink.
Dr Will B,
If you hate country music thats fine, but not everyone hates it just because you do.I have been to all the country music concerts at the SMC, they have all been a great show.
Hey mogear,
If you like country dont voice your opinion on this blog. Rock fans no how to party. Maybe we could get Miley Cyrus to perform and sell kiddie cocktails for everyone.
This was by far the best concert in show me center history. A sellout with the weather conditions outside. I just wish there was more places to get some food after the concert.
Hey Jackson USA... Well, let's see, I was at Show Me Center for the Heart/Mister Mister concert, Aerosmith/Guns N Roses concert, Tesla/Great White concert, Def Leppard/Joan Jett concert, Styx/Kansas/Waite concert. In St. Louis Bon Jovi/Cinderella concert, Great White concert, Tesla concert and in Carbondale Bon Jovi/Skid Row.. maybe that's not a lot of concerts to you, I don't know.. I was out of town when Tool was here.. I've never seen moshing at any of these concerts and I've seen drinking, which is okay with me, but when you're so drunk you're falling into me, etc..enough is enough. As I'd mentioned before I like being on the floor, you get a better view, but I like to have my space and everyone else can have their space without invading mine and I'll not be rude and do anything to invade theirs.
DKKCCG:
The reason none of those concerts had moshing is because none of those concerts were Metal or have a fanbase consisting mostly of hormonal teenagers that think they can be "hardcore." If you went to an actual Hard Rock show like Metallica or Ankla, the story would be much different.
Anyway, this concert proved nothing other than SEMO being a cultural wasteland. The only show to sell out in recent years was Seether and Three Days Grace. Seether. SEETHER.
Yet another reason I'm glad I moved out of there. The sooner I can see Dream Theater and Opeth at the Gibson Amphitheater down the street, the better.
recman,
I went to the concert and it was great, it was the best in a very long time. The best in SMC history? No, Guns N Roses/ Aerosmith was the best in SMC history.
As far as KNOW how to party.Come down to the farm sometime to see a real party.there aint no dress code, there aint no cover charge, just country boys and girls getten down on the farm.(I think theres a country song in that)
Good story Matt. Thanks for always shedding light on the real story about the SMC. I know I appreciate it and it is great to see someone who doesn't sugarcoat things just to be a suck up. You are a good man. :)
I am glad they sold it out. I am glad if and when they sell anything out. I think they have a problem with marketing and promoting. Sure, I might live under a rock, but I would have gone to see Carvel/matalin... I didn't know about it until it was over.
While I think the Krauss/Plant effort is junk I hope they get that here. Plant is a legend no matter how you look at it.
I still wish they had gotten the Slayer/ Marilyn Manson tour. If nothing else to scare the hell out of SE Missouri.
I think if Slayer and Manson came to SE Missouri,we would scare the hell out of them.
This is what the SMC needed to happen to get more current rock bands to cape.Lets hope the powers that be the SMC will work to get them here.
Very interesting blogging comments here.
Matt, regarding your writing style, there is no question of your reporting of the facts. Just like the proverbial half of glass of water. Some prefer to view the glass as half full and some prefer to view that glass as half empty.
Both are the facts, you just seem to like the approach from the half empty side.
Regarding the show being the best ever, that will always be debatable, but 3DG/BB/Seether was a very good one and deserving of being included in that debate. With the weather being what it was, it was obvious that only those who wanted to be there really bad, would be. Those who did attend, were intent on having a very good time.
Regarding the Show Me Center's ability to attract shows of any particular genre, it is more a function of how well they are supported with fans buying tickets. When promoters sell enough tickets to justify their financial investment, they will continue to bring more shows. Every show is a separate decision based on the economics at the time. What are the demands and cost of the particular artists? What does your crystal ball say about the number of tickets that can be sold? And as long as you are making predictions, what price will people pay to see that show?
$10; $20; $30; $40 or even $75 dollars each? Now that you have a firm grasp of the unknown, how much money are you willing to risk on your answers?
That is why sellouts are to be celebrated. They are indeed rare, regardless of where the concert is performed and it acknowledges a lot of correct decisions that have been made along the way.
It was a great show and I hope the Show Me Center is successful in attracting more offerings just like it, and people turn out to support them.
J Sohn - The Carville/Matlin debate was put on by the University, and the Show Me Center hosted the event. I knew about it, but didn't go, heard it was very entertaining though, with a good turnout and I'm kicking myself for not attending.
Regarding the sell out - It's great to see rock fans come out to support the show, despite the horrible weather! And seeing the varying ages that attended I was impressed at the draw of the bands playing, it made a great first concert for many attending!
For rock in SE Missouri, this was an excellent showing, hopefully there will be more to come and based on the attendance of the Three Days Grace show, the future looks bright (even if SEETHER was there, right Weszor?).
Kllrfsh-
All of the bands performing were horrible. Seether was just the worst. It's not really surprising it took mediocre, vanilla, unoffensive, and untalented Rock to sell out the Show-Me Center, though. The Midwest wouldn't know decent music if all the cities had loudspeakers playing it 24/7.
That is why we laugh at you from the coasts. That is why you fail.
Boy you "rock snobs" are all alike. You think only the music you like is good and look down your nose at anything else. I didn't go to this concert, I'm more of a jazz and blues man these days, but I don't presume to force my tastes on anyone else. If people enjoyed a sold out show at the SMC I think it's great no matter who played. Get over yourself! BTW, this area is the heartland of America and the people here are the type that makes this country great. The laughter of bi-coastal jerks means nothing to us and we are a long way from being failures. It seems to me that most bad news I hear comes from one of the coasts!
Weszor - I think you'd be surprised at the tastes of the Midwest, many are transplants from the coasts, however there may be some brainwashing that comes with moving here.
And whether or not the show was "vanilla" really isn't the point, it showed there are fans of rock, perhaps not the same genre as what you enjoy, but fans nonetheless.
Now the loud speakers playing rock 24/7, I'm up for that.
On the show, to be honest, I really liked HURT. I hadn't really heard of them until the concert and they weren't bad at all (friendly too), guess I'll have to saunter on down to the old record store and pick up their latest 33 LP. Or maybe I'll just grab the 45, my He-Man record player will play it great on my Hi-Fi system (wonder if there's an 8 track version).
Kllrfsh-
No, I'm really not surprised. I lived in Jackson for the majority of my life, and I'm not at all surprised that so many people out here in the West Coast are from states like Missouri and Kansas. Aside from a few larger cities like St. Louis and Chicago, the Midwest really doesn't have that much to offer in terms of taste. Sorry.
And, Data, no, the Midwest isn't filled with the type of people that make this country great. It's filled with close-minded, one-track-mind individuals who really have no grasp or concept of the world outside their own bubble. You could fit your entire state into my city alone, to put things into perspective. You hear more about the coasts because we have several times more people. Hmm... I wonder why that is?
If only the coastal areas matter why are you posting on this forum all the time? Seems to me you shouldn't be worrying too much what us "close-minded, one track mind individuals" (BTW do you realize how redundant that statement was? Yes, we do use words like redundant!) here are doing or what we think about things.
And another thing. The only person on this forum that has displayed any tendency towards being close-minded is you Weszor. I like all types of music, not just a narrow range of it like you seem to and have never called anyone else names for liking something different. You should clean your own house before you start trash talking about others.

A few reasons I still keep my eye on this site. One, I worked for the Missourian before my move out here. I was one of their ad designers, and I still enjoy seeing what they are coming up with. It was a great company to work for, and they have my respect. Two, I still have family in Jackson, and events that show up in the paper and blogs are still relevant to them. Third, I enjoy Internet forums and posting on them for no apparent reason at all.
Also, I hardly need to "clean house" in order to critique other interests. That's a horrible strawman argument to use and rarely holds up in any debate. As it is said, you do not have to be a movie director to critique a film. If you are so worried about myself only liking one type of music, then you obviously know nothing about me, even when such information is readily available on the Internet. My Last.fm profile is at http://www.last.fm/user/Serphius/ and contains information about what I listen to. I have everything from Death Metal to Huun-Huur Tu. There's 28.6GB and over a week of straight music, from just about every genre of choice.
The reason I am venting is because, among those of us that listen, discuss, and study music on a regular basis, the bands performing are generic and uninspired. They become popular because it's easy to listen to as background music and remains as neutral as possible so people do not get offended. The idea that Three Days Grace and Seether can sell out a show whereas a marginally better band like Tool cannot is a testament to just how low the culture in SEMO really is.
It is good that the SMC sold out this show, now when they approch a tour about playing Cape they can get some attention. Also the agencies, an tour managers will note the success and not dismiss the market.
County has sold well in the past so we get county. If rock sells we will get more rock. The venue and its management can only keep themselfs out in front of the powers that be. They can only say were here.
"Buddy Guy did not sell....well lets not route Jonny Lang or Robert Cray there"
"Chesney, Pasily, Alan Jackson ect did good there as they were coming up....lets take Sugarland"
"Crosby Stills, Moody Blues, Dylan, that era, only sell 3500....well maybe mid week"
Monster Trucks and WWE do well....we'll be back
All 4 bands were high on the billboard charts for the 3DG show. It did well. As the other bands of that ilk look to route, Cape may now get some.
consideration.
You get what you supoort.
If one like a style of music then when it comes this way support it....and you will get more.
You can write all the long winded explanations you want to and it still doesn't change the fact that you came on here and called people names simply because you didn't like a band they went to see than had the nerve to call US close minded. What a hypocrite!
Data-
You keep mentioning all of these names I called you, but where are they? One thing I don't do is come onto forums and start personally insulting people. What I did was generalize the entire Midwest and SEMO, which you are in turn taking as a personal insult. That's your problem, not mine, and I have not called anyone in this blog by any name. It's your own fault for wanting to lump yourself in with your area so badly that you feel offended by my comments.
Case in point. Game. Set. Match.
PS - You also shouldn't be talking about hypocrisy so much. My reasons for coming onto this site are probably very similar to the reasons why you keep responding instead of just ignoring these comments and moving on.
Hi. Welcome to the Internet. Please enjoy your order of Random Pointless Debate. Tomorrow we will have a special on Image Macroes and Catchphrases.
OOH!! BEST SHOW EVER AT THE SMC????
CARROT TOP!!!!
;-)
YEOW!!!
NUFF SAID.
Nothing against the bands that played, but I think none would have sold out the SMC individually. The big seller was 4 good bands at a price that was affordable.
